SEEEING IS BELIEVING EYE CARE HEALTH

Standard Chartered Bank and SightSavers in partnership with Ministry of Health

The project helped over 4,500 people receive sight-saving cataract surgeries, improving their well-being and that of their families. It created demand for sustainable eye care services in eight districts, focusing on disadvantaged groups like women and disabled persons. The initiative supported routine eye clinics, provided eye equipment, and trained ophthalmic nurses in Chinsali, Isoka, and Chama districts. Additionally, it expanded ZAMSOF membership through partnerships and dispensed 27,856 spectacles and 1,421 glasses to school children.

Capacity Development Initiative to enhance citizen participation in local, national, and international climate policy-making, Phase 2

The project successfully advocated for climate justice actions at local levels with significant support from local government officials, civil society, and smallholder farmers. Key achievements include securing compensation for mining-affected communities, promoting sustainable farming practices, and building resilience by installing water irrigation at Kamukolwe Farm Block for 110 women smallholder farmers.

Movement Building on Food Sovereignty and Agroecology in the Global South

People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS)

In partnership with the Zambia Social Forum (ZAMSOF), this project strengthened networks among small-scale farmers, fisherfolk, and indigenous communities. It promoted pro-agroecology policies, organized training in agroecological practices, and conducted awareness campaigns. The project successfully empowered 120 women and youth, demonstrating agroecology's potential as an alternative to industrial agriculture.

Zambia Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries Programme

October 2020 - October 2023
Sinazongwe and Mazabuka Districts, Southern Province, Zambia
European Union Ecofish – ActionAid Zambia

The project focused on empowering 4,660 fishers through the establishment of 70 Community Fisheries Committees across seven districts. It provided training on sustainable fishing, market access, and water rights. Key achievements include the development of Zambia’s first fisheries co-management manual and significant improvements in fishers’ livelihoods through value addition and gender-responsive market access.

Community Engagement and Empowerment (CEEP)

GIZ – German Development Cooperation

The project used a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to establish Ward Development Communities and Local Area Plans in Lusaka and Kafue districts. It empowered communities to engage in participatory planning, governance, and climate change adaptation, leading to improved local development, groundwater protection, and COVID-19 response strategies.

Building Grassroots Collective for Climate Justice and Natural Resource Sovereignty

This project trained 120 small-scale farmers in agroecology and food sovereignty, enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Women and farmers increased their involvement in agricultural policy, with key outcomes including improved local relationships, climate justice dialogue meetings, and tree planting advocacy.

Southern Africa Markets Campaign Zambia

Oxfam Southern Africa, FANRPAN – Southern Africa Peoples Solidarity Network (SAPSN)

The project focused on improving market access for smallholder farmers, particularly women, through policy reforms and market information sharing. A multi-stakeholder platform was established to enhance access to sustainable horticultural markets, improving household incomes and market access for women and youth farmers.

Citizen Action for Debt Justice Campaign

February 2022 - May 2023

Catholic Agency for and Development Organization (CAFOD) - Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD)

This campaign raised public awareness on debt justice through social media, radio, and mainstream publications, culminating in the Global Week of Action on Debt Cancellation and Justice in 2022. The project successfully conducted a national social audit on debt and advocated for reform of Zambia's Loans and Guarantees Act.
